keeping communities alive
The stewardship of this region is really only possible through the community involvement of the people who live in the villages. We’d like to share with you examples of community collaborations.
In Ding-li Wan, over the past several years 300 people have come together and pooled their resources to create an agro-tourism enterprise. In the village there is now a small campground, a dining hall and a café that draws tourists from urban centers who want to experience country life. The collective also organizes tourists to visit farmers, to buy their organic produce and it serves this same local organic regional food in the dining hall. It is a small enterprise, but as a result 100 jobs have also been created and the population of Ding-li Wan has grown from a low point of 30 people up to 380, with 280 people commuting to jobs beyond the forest area.
We hope that stories like this will spark your interest in the region’s most important economic commodity, it’s old growth forest Camellia oil and to possibly intrigue you enough to visit.
